Online instructional designers from academia and industry coming together to share strategies, research, techniques, and ideas. Please send a note to join us! We'll become public as soon as Ning enables the private-to-public switch in summer 2007.

Welcome to the "eLearning Strategy" network! Please feel free to introduce yourselves to everyone in the Forum area and post your profile!

This is the first step we're taking to launch a professional group for instructional designers who design online courses, including hybrid courses. ASTD and other groups do cover this, of course, but with their extremely broad scope they can miss the focus that’s specific to online designers. We will probably focus on the education/academic industry, but there’s a lot of overlap of technique and tools with training departments everywhere, especially where I am in University Extension, which does mostly continuing education for adults.

My department is very enthusiastic about supporting this endeavor. We’re thinking about supporting continuing education for IDs, including certification, networking, resources, etc. and perhaps a conference after about a year or so. We have a particular interest in not only what we could call 'traditional' online instructional design strategy, management and techniques, but also the 'cutting edge' social learning technologies, such as wikis, podcasting, and Second Life.

This is the baby step - getting us all together in one place and getting to know one another. I'm aiming for a first online meeting/conference - in the fall. Please feel free to invite others who may be interested, and please do post a hello to get things rolling! Very glad to see you here!

Eduserv Symposium 5/10

I attended the Eduserv Symposium the other night via SecondLife. It was held in a double venue - in real life in London, and via 2-way broadcast in SecondLife in three different in-world locations. It worked incredibly well, I have to say. SecondLife attendees watched a live streaming video feed from the real life event. Speakers could see the SecondLife venues in their monitors, along with the IM chat taking place, and could respond to questions The SecondLife announcer was able to provide a

Planning for July/August

Hi, all,

I know everyone who's joined here is incredibly busy! For at least a couple of you who are working on master's or doctorate programs, it'll ease up in summer just a bit. My workload will, too, once I get past some of these murderous June 30 development grant deadlines. :-/

I'd like to plan for a first online "event" at the end of July or beginning of August, which will give us a little time to plan and promote. Perhaps we can combine a meet-and-greet with a presentation

Audio - latest toy

At the moment, my latest toy is audio. We just bought a Marantz 671 solid-state professional audio recorder for podcasts, audio lectures, guest lecturers, etc and I took it out to play for the first time today, to record an interview with an emeritus professor renowned in California Indian ethnography.

I discovered instantly that the memory card it came with was too small (256 mb / 35 min at 16 bit mp3) and that if you… Continue

OpenCourseWare

I wanted to share a couple of OpenCourseWare links. OpenCourseWare, if you're not familiar with it, is open and free educational content, organized as courses.

The first is UCI's OpenCourseWare site. We have three full courses up right now; Personal Financial Planning, Training & HR, and eMarketing (in Spanish). We're currently working on a whole series of CSET (teacher prep) courses for Math and Science. These really demonstrate nicely how we deli
